THE DANCING BEARS
Who are those Dancing Bears?
We took our name, in part, from the fact that we are all contra dancers. We play tunes from many different traditions including Celtic, New England, Appalachian, and French Canadian, as well as Swing tunes popular in the 20's and 30's. We combine these styles in ways that will often surprise and delight dancers, seasoned with occasional, sudden outbursts of Funk. Most of us are long time Ashevillians. John Culp plays mandolin, Celtic guitar, banjo, and bodhran, and brings in a strong influence of traditional New England and Celtic music. Skip Metheny brings his impeccable sense of rhythm to the electric bass, and adds an occasional Funk flavor to the mix. Skip is also an excellent drummer. Mark Langner lends a swing flavor to the band on guitar. He builds and plays his own instruments, and is a contra dance caller and dance writer. Fiddler Lew Gelfond migrated to Asheville around 6 years ago, bringing his own mixture of Bluegrass, Swing, New England and Celtic music. Lew likes a lot of different styles, but swing is his favorite. Overall? We love what we do.
